Astronomy Night took place on 24 July, 2007 at the University of Cyprus, in the context of a series of astronomical activities campers implemented during the Science Camp for Girls project. Participants were Greek Cypriot and Turkish Cypriot girls aged 11 – 14.
Science Camp for Girls was organised by the Learning in Science Group, University of Cyprus and was funded by the United Nations Development Programme, Action for Cooperation and Trust in Cyprus, which receives support from the American people through a grant from USAID. It’s long-term objective of the project was to initiate a sustainable mechanism for actively engaging young girls in authentic science activities that give them first-hand experience with real science, cultivating positive attitudes among young women towards their own engagement in science and technology and enhancing the interest of girls in science related studies.
More information on the project can be found at http://lsg.ucy.ac.cy/lsg/english/programs/sciencecampforgirls/ .
Cyprus Astronomical Society was invited to help with the telescopes setup and to give an astronomy lecture and answer any questions.
