Perseids Meteor Shower 2007 The day after Amazing Perseids! Sunday night's Meteor shower amazed the crowds who gathered at Xyliatos dam and even though the fog covered the sky before midnight, viewers had witnessed many fireballs lighting up the skies! The crowds began gathering at Xyliatos dam as early as dusk and took the C.A.S. by surprise as nobody expected that many people! C.A.S. members kept the anxious observers busy with peeks at Jupiter and other celestial sights through their telescopes, in anticipation for the real show, the annual Perseid meteor shower! Sadly, an unexpected fog covered the entire observing area in minutes, and a large number of people took off. Some remained to be rewarded with clear skies again and surely they enjoyed the celestial show! The C.A.S. members decided to go to the extremes! Chasing the ever-growing number of spectacular fireballs we reached the end of the road at mt. Olympus were we remained until dawn and observed in awe! Numerous fireballs with trails remaining visible for many seconds and multiple meteors at a time made us scream in enthousiasm! Until the next one then, clear skies! Arrival time: 22:30' Click here for Xyliatios Dam map The Perseids, one of the year's better meteor showers, will be taking place over the next few days and 2007 offers an excellent opportunity to view the Perseids. The Perseids, one of the most famous showers, will peak during the pre-dawn hours of August 12th, but some may be spotted now through August 22nd. The Perseids have a peak rate of 60 meteors per hour. This year the Moon is being very cooperative and will not interfere with this year's display. In the northern hemisphere the radiant of this shower rises in the Northeast in the early evening. While some may be seen as early as 10 PM your local time, the shower rates increase considerably after midnight. Perseid meteors are caused by the orbital debris left by comet Swift- Tuttle. Swift-Tuttle was discovered in 1862 and it has an orbital period of about 130 years. It last visited our solar system during the summer of 1992. Observers in Europe and Asia, may be treated to meteors from a recent dust filament crossing the Earth's orbit. This "recent" filament was left by comet Swift-Tuttle during its 1862 pass through our solar system. These meteors will likely be fairly faint, but if you can observe from dark skies., you may rewarded with views of hundreds of meteors. If you're in Europe or Asia, you can try to observe these around 00:00’ UT on August 12th. You can observe anytime after midnight in your local time and the best views will be between 2:00 AM your time and when the sky brightens at dawn. To view the Perseids, generally view toward the northeast, but remember Perseids can and will appear anywhere in your skies. So while the northeast is preferred, view upward toward the darkest, least obstructed portion of your sky. Find something comfortable to sit or lie upon in an area away from sky glow of urban areas if possible. Don't forget to dress appropriately and if you live in a hot, humid area as I do, you may want to have some insect repellant handy. :) .....BUT HOWEVER YOU OBSERVE THEM....make this the most interesting, exciting and shared moment of celestial observation that you have experienced this year. DON'T MISS OUR ASTRONOMY EVENTS IN SEPTEMBER 2007.   Greek message. Περιμένοντας τις “Περσείδες” Αυτός ο μήνας μας φέρνει μια μεγάλη πρόκληση θαυμασμού και περιέργειας. Ένα φαινόμενο το οποίο θα προσφέρει σίγουρα ένα εντυπωσιακό θέαμα και που αξίζει να το παρακολουθήσει κανείς. Πρόκειται για το φαινόμενο των γνωστών “Πεφταστεριών” και πιο συγκεκριμένα για τις “Περσείδες”, οι οποίες αναμένονται στη Γη με ιδιαίτερο ενδιαφέρον, στις 12 και 13 Αυγούστου 2007. (Μέγιστο φαινομένου) Οι “Περσείδες” είναι μια ομάδα διαττόντων αστεριών που προέρχονται από την κατεύθυνση του αστερισμού του Περσέα. Εμφανίζονται κάθε Αύγουστο ως υπολείμματα του κομήτη ” Swift-Tuttle”. Κάθε κομήτης που επισκέπτεται τη Γη, αφήνει πίσω του μικρά σώματα τα οποία πέφτουν προς τον πλανήτη μας σε εντυπωσιακές “Βροχές “ αστεριών που θυμίζουν ουράνια πυροτεχνήματα . Το ενδιαφέρον εδώ είναι ότι, αυτά τα μικρά σώματα είναι απομεινάρια από την εποχή που γεννήθηκε το ηλιακό μας σύστημα, ενώ υπάρχουν και ορισμένα που προέρχονται από σφοδρές συγκρούσεις αστεροειδών και κομητών. Οι “Περσείδες” είναι φτιαγμένοι από ένα κράμα σιδήρου, νικελίου και περιέχουν μικρή δόση ραδιενέργειας . Τρέχουν 60 χλμ. το δευτερόλεπτο (216.000 km την ώρα), και όσα έλκονται από τη Γη , χτυπάνε τα ανώτερα στρώματα της ατμόσφαιρας της γης σε ύψος 100 περίπου χλμ. και αναφλέγονται . Όσοι λοιπόν δεν είχαν την ευκαιρία να κάνουν μία ευχή βλέποντας κάποιο άστρο να πέφτει , θα την έχουν τώρα , καθώς η Αστρονομική Εταιρία Κύπρου καλεί όλους να ξενυχτήσουν για να απολαύσουν αυτό το όμορφο θέαμα , που μας προσφέρει ο νυκτερινός ουρανός. Για όσους επιθυμούν να παρακολουθήσουν καλύτερα το φαινόμενο αυτό, η Αστρονομική Εταιρία Κύπρου θα διοργανώσει <Αστρονομική Βραδιά> στο φράγμα του Ξυλιάτου. Στον χώρο θα υπάρχουν αρκετά τηλεσκόπια για να δείτε διάφορα ουράνια σώματα, όπως άλλους γαλαξίες, αστρικά σμήνη, νεφελώματα κ.ά. ενώ τα μέλη της εταιρίας θα είναι στην διάθεση σας για να σας λύσουν όποιες απορίες έχετε σχετικά με το φαινόμενο αυτό ή τον μαγευτικό κόσμο του σύμπαντος, γενικότερα. Συνιστούμε όπως εκμεταλλευτείτε αυτή την ευκαιρία για να γνωρίσετε από κοντά και την Αστρονομική Εταιρία Κύπρου και τα μέλη της αλλά καθώς επίσης να πάρετε και μια μικρή γεύση από το θαυμαστό κόσμο της Αστρονομίας και του έναστρου ουρανού!
